In Learn to Smile, Learn to Laugh, Learn to Be Happy, Owen Eric Wood not only projects a video image of himself onto a mould of his face, he also projects the video onto his own face during the performance. The video acts as an ironic mask as it represents what it attempts to cover up.

Learn to Smile, Learn to Laugh, Learn to Be Happy
Owen Eric Wood (Canada)
performance, 7 min.

Three self portraits are created using a combination of sculpture, video and performance. The artist mimicks the acts of smiling and laughing in order to engage himself in happiness. However, human emotions are a reaction to experiences. They are how we experience life. They cannot be controlled.

As a result, the various depictions of happiness compound upon one another, creating an anxious and uncomfortable tone that is anything but the desired effect.
